Why does it matter which council I'm under?
Your local planning authority decides your application, sets local policy on things like conservation areas and Article 4 directions, and has its own validation checklist. Two houses a mile apart can sit under different councils with different expectations.
Is my council the same as my county?
Not always. In Greater Manchester, for example, planning is handled by the individual borough — Trafford, Stockport, Wigan and so on — not by a Greater Manchester body. This tool gives you the council that actually determines applications.
Does this tell me whether I need planning permission?
