A dark back kitchen turned into the room the whole family lives in
The situation before
A family of four in a 1930s semi near the Menai Strait. The kitchen was small, dark and cut off from the garden.
What triggered it
“It just wasn't working for us anymore. We couldn't all be in the kitchen at once.”
How we challenged the brief
They wanted a large island and bifold doors across the whole back. We challenged the layout — keeping the sink under the existing window saved thousands in drainage, and a roof lantern did more for light than extra glazing would have.
The design solution
A 24m² rear extension with a roof lantern, a peninsula rather than a full island, and sliding doors to the garden. Services stayed close to existing runs to control cost.
